about

I probably wrote this song nearly 30 years ago, but it was coming all my life. Looking back, I realize that I have been beset by what I describe as The Terrible Triad since I was born.

I call it The Terrible Triad because DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, and ANGER invariably hunt in a pack.

Depression…which I call cancer of the soul, is a disease made so much worse by the fact that the very organ that one uses to rationalise and deal with other diseases – the mind - is in fact diseased, which leaves one with a feeling of being trapped inside a “corridor of grey” with no possible tool for escape.

However, depression is never a terminal disease (unless it leads to suicide), and I have managed to find a small inner voice that reminds me, even in the deepest depression, that it is only a trick of the mind, and it will pass. Like crossing a terrible desert…I WILL get to the other side.

I dedicate this song to all of you who may also suffer from this terrible affliction. Just know you are not alone.

lyrics

CORRIDORS OF GREY (Don Clarke)

I HAVE SEEN IT ALL BEFORE MY FRIEND;
I BUY A DREAM THAT I AM SURE WILL NEVER END.
BUT IN TIME IT ALWAYS SLIPS AWAY
AND LEAVES ME STUMBLING THROUGH THESE CORRIDORS OF GREY

LIKE A BROKEN HEART IN A FROZEN HAND
LIKE AN ANCIENT LEGEND THAT LIES DYING IN THE SAND
I CAN ONLY TELL BUT I CANNOT SAY
UNTIL THEY LEAD ME FROM THESE CORRIDORS OF GREY.

HOW CAN I BE SURE THAT I AM SURE
IN A ROOM THAT HAS NO WINDOWS AND NO DOOR?
HOW CAN I BE SURE IT'S NIGHT OR DAY
WHILE I'M TRAPPED INSIDE THESE CORRIDORS OF GREY?

LIKE A BROKEN HEART IN A FROZEN HAND
LIKE AN ANCIENT LEGEND THAT LIES DYING IN THE SAND
I CAN ONLY TELL BUT I CANNOT SAY
UNTIL THEY LEAD ME FROM THESE CORRIDORS OF GREY.
UNTIL THEY LEAD ME FROM THESE CORRIDORS OF
GREY..EY..EEY (repeat x4 segue into Part 2)

SO ADDRESS YOURSELF IN SILENCE
WHEN YOU CANNOT SPEAK YOUR MIND;
EXPRESS YOURSELF WITH VIOLENCE
IF YOU HAVE TO BE UNKIND,
BUT REMEMBER THAT IN ANGER
YOUR SONG MAY HAVE NO TUNE,
AND EACH WORD WILL BRING YOU CLOSER TO
THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON.
IN EACH OF US IS DARKNESS,
IN EACH OF US IS LIGHT;
WE CANNOT KNOW THAT WE ARE WRONG
UNTIL WE KNOW WE'RE RIGHT.
BUT SOMETIMES THE SPIRIT LEADS US
A LITTLE BIT TOO FAR,
AND THROUGH THE MIST WE SEE OURSELVES
AS LESS THAN WHO WE ARE. (solo into Part 3)

SILENCE, PERFECT SILENCE, LIQUID CALMNESS FLOODS MY MIND
I AM LOST IN PERFECT BLINDNESS, AND I'M NO LONGER PART OF TIME.
HOLD ME, MOTHER HOLD ME, LIKE YOU DID WHEN I WAS A CHILD.
TILL THE'RE NO MORE DEMONS AND NO MORE CORPSES
AND ALL MY FEARS ARE FAR BEHIND
AND ALL MY FEARS ARE FAR BEHIND........

I HAVE SEEN IT ALL BEFORE MY FRIEND
IT'S A DARKNESS SO MUCH DARKER IN THE END
LIKE A THIEF I'VE STOLEN MY OWN MIND
AND I'LL BE RUNNING FROM MYSELF UNTIL I DIE
LIKE A BROKEN HEART IN A FROZEN HAND
LIKE AN ANCIENT LEGEND THAT LIES DYING IN THE SAND
I CAN ONLY TELL BUT I CANNOT SAY
UNTIL THEY LEAD ME FROM THESE CORRIDORS OF GREY;
UNTIL THEY LEAD ME FROM THESE CORRIDORS OF GREY;
UNTIL THEY LEAD ME FROM THESE CORRIDORS OF GREY.
